Aussie News 10: China court accepts Avatar plagiarism case
A BEIJING court will hear a case filed against film director James Cameron by a Chinese man who claims the idea for Cameron's latest blockbuster sci-fi movie came from a novel he published.
After throwing out the case in March due to insufficient evidence, the court agreed to the hearing after Zhou Shaomou dropped a demand for as much as $US147 million in compensation, the China Daily said, citing the author.
Avatar, the top-grossing movie of all time, has raked in some $US2.7 billion worldwide since its release.
"I was told to go to the court next Monday to provide more material," Mr Zhou said, without providing details of the new evidence.
Mr Zhou has reserved the right to seek compensation before the Beijing Number One Intermediate Court rules on the case, the state-run newspaper said.
A court official told the China Daily that it could take six months before the case is heard.
"Due to the fact that some accused parties are foreigners or foreign companies it takes time to send the indictment through diplomatic channels," the official Lu Yao said.
Besides Cameron, Mr Zhou is also suing 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, two Chinese movie distributors and Haidian Theatre where he watched the film.
Mr Zhou said the plot of Avatar - the story of a paraplegic former US Marine who is sent to live with a race of blue aliens on the Earth-like moon Pandora - closely resembled that of a novel he wrote in 1997.
The novel, The Legend of the Blue Crow, was published on two Chinese websites in segments in 1999, previous state media reports have said.
However, the official website for the film says Cameron first developed the idea 15 years ago - a few years before Mr Zhou's novel was completed.
Avatar has been wildly popular in China, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film in the country's history after its January 4 release in both 2D and 3D versions.
Comment: Plagiarism is a negative behaviour, so I hope that the related authorities will investigate this case and take prompt action.
Aussie News 9: Young women put Facebook before going to the toilet
- Women increasingly addicted to social media
- One in five wake up in night to reply to postings
- Bosses who ban Facebook do so at their peril
ONE third of young women check Facebook before brushing their teeth or going to the toilet in the mornings.
New research reveals women aged 18 to 34 are becoming increasingly addicted and dependent upon technology and social networking sites.
One in five even said they woke up in the middle of the night to respond to wall postings, tweets and texts, while 37 per cent have fallen asleep with their phones in their hands.
The study of more than 1600 American social media users by Oxygen Media was conducted to chart online behavioural trends.
It also showed that although 63 per cent of respondents used Facebook for networking, nearly half said they had no problem posting photos of their drunken selves on the site.
Other key findings of the study were:
- 79 per cent are fine with kissing in photos posted on Facebook;
- 58 per cent use Facebook to keep tabs on “frenemies”; and
- 50 per cent are fine with being Facebook friends with complete strangers.
A seperate study out this week found that bosses who block Facebook actually hinder productivity in the workplace.
The book Wellbeing: The Five Essential Elements, which draws upon Gallup Consulting research from more than 150 countries, identified five essential elements to overall wellbeing - career wellbeing, social wellbeing, financial wellbeing, physical wellbeing and community wellbeing.
The book's co-author, Tom Rath, said that a person thriving in all five elements will be a better employee.
Part of the reason blocking Facebook and Twitter at work may prove detrimental is the book's finding that people need about six hours of social interaction a day, whether they were introverts or extroverts.
Gallup Consulting engagement manager Allan Watkinson said a part of that time would have to come in the workplace, and the prospect of staff spending hours logged onto social media sites worried some bosses.
"It scares employers that people are going to be sociable and not productive," Mr Watkinson said.
"However, we found that if you can promote that tool and use it in an effective way, actually you are going to get higher productivity."
Comment: We can serve facebook or twitter, but we need to control the time used. So, moderation is very important. If we not exceed, it will bring benefit to us.
Aussie News 8:Couple found dead in Dunlop died of gunshot wounds, say police
-Kids holidaying with relatives
-No third person involved - police
A COUPLE found dead in their Canberra home died from gunshot wounds inflicted by one or the other of the deceased, police said.
The pair were found in their Dunlop residence, in Canberra's north-west, yesterday afternoon by police officers.
It is believed a colleague raised the alarm when the man failed to show up for work.
"It appears both deceased persons died from apparent gunshot wounds," an ACT Policing spokeswoman said.
"Police do not believe that a third person is involved."
Senior Constable Kyle Williams told reporters outside the house the shooting deaths were "very tragic and a very sad incident".
"The male and female deceased where known to each other through a domestic relationship," he said, adding they had two children.
"Two young children have been located safely. They are currently in the care of family members. They were not involved in this incident."
It's believed the children were staying with relatives for the school holidays when the shootings occurred.
The fatal wounds were inflicted by one or the other of the deceased, Senior Constable Williams said.
"It is apparent from inquiries that the male and female have died from apparent gunshot wounds.
"At this stage police do not believe any other person was involved."
Senior Constable Williams wouldn't say if more than one gun had been found in the house. Nor would he comment when asked if police were investigating a murder-suicide.
It's thought the man and woman were both in their 30s.
Their names will be released after police have informed all family members of their deaths.
Polwarth Circuit remains closed but Senior Constable Williams said it would reopen "within 48 hours".
A neighbour told AAP last night the deceased were a "lovely couple" with two young children, a boy and a girl, who had lived at the house for about eight years.
ACT Policing said a number of witnesses had provided statements and their investigations were ongoing.
"However, anyone who has not yet spoken to police and can provide information which may be able to assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," the spokeswoman said.

Television Viewing Draft #3
Television has become a basic need of the individuals to the extent that more than ninety per cent of households in developed countries have a television set (Sharif 1999). Television has attracted audiences of all ages since the time it was invented (Leigh 2001). According to American Time Use Survey (2003), the public spend more hours per day in watching television than doing other activities such as reading, leisure and sports. In addition, the full-time workers also spend most of their free time in watching television and video or listening to radio (UK Time Use Survey 2000). This shows that the public spend most of their time in front of the television. The society has become more aware of the effects of television viewing, thus leading to arguments on whether television viewing benefits the viewers or not. I strongly believe that television viewing brings more good than harm to the viewers because television programs increase the knowledge, provide an additional dimension to learning and encourage critical thinking skills.
First of all, television viewing provides a wide variety of useful information and knowledge to the viewers. This is proven by Rutherford (2002), he says that television viewers are able to obtain information about the world, culture, animal kingdom and others from the television programs. Besides that, public can learn the ways of solving a complicated scientific equation in an interesting and enjoyable way (Rutherford 2002). Television news programs also provide the information of the current issues that happen in the world to the public (Sharif 1999). Furthermore, according to Sharif (1999), by watching television programs, public are inform about the global problems and disasters that happen in certain area, this can stimulate them to do charity like raising money for the victims of famine in Africa.
Thirdly, television programs can encourage critical thinking among the viewers. Television is an interesting and attracting medium. By watching the television programs which related to the matters of human problems for examples, globalisation and homelessness will stimulates the viewers to think more and critically (Leigh 2001). In addition, according to Sharif (1999), he says that family members can gather and discuss on the better solutions to solve the conflict from the television programs. These discussions can “help develop critical thinking, a necessary skill in both social settings and at school” (Sharif 1999, p.34).
As a conclusion, I strongly agree that television viewing brings more advantages than disadvantages to the viewers. Public should know that watching television programs will benefit them in different ways like increase the information and knowledge, have an additional dimension to learning as well as develop in critical thinking.

Secondly, television programs supply an additional dimension to learning which bring a lot of benefits to the viewers. Television is an audio-visual medium. Leigh (2001) comments that the different and interesting manners of presenting the science, geography and other subjects help the television viewers to understand more about the information provided. Television is also used as a teaching tool. According to Rutherford (2002), the programs, for instance ‘Sesame Street’ which use animation and puppets to teach the pre-schoolers to recognise the colours, numbers, and alphabet letters. Leigh (2001) also states that the children who watch the television programs tend to know more vocabulary. On the other hand, by learning from the television, students can understand well and remember the information that they have heard and seen as compared to the information from books (Leigh 2001).
Thirdly, television programs can encourage critical thinking among the viewers. Television is an exciting and attracting medium that it stimulates critical reasoning about the matters of human problems, for examples, globalisation and homelessness (Leigh 2001). Aussie News 7:Missing Facebook teen found dead
- Teenager met 'two men' on Facebook
- Police reveal her body has been found
- Man has been arrested and charged
A TEENAGER missing from home after arranging a camping trip with two men she met on Facebook was found dead last night.
Homicide detectives, who are leading the investigation, arrested a 20-year-old Leumeah man about 8pm.
Police this morning charged him with murder after the discovery of the body which is believed to be Nona Belomesoff. The man has been refused bail and will appear at Parramatta Bail Court later today.
Police will allege that the second man she believed she was meeting did not exist.
Offficers revealed at 1am that they had found a woman's body about 9.40pm after scouring bushland near Waminda Oval at Waminda Ave, East Campbelltown in Sydney's west.
The teenager's family notified police when she failed to return home on Thursday and was unable to be reached on her mobile phone.
A family member told The Daily Telegraph they believed she was camping with work friends on Wednesday and expected her back home the following day.
Miss Belomesoff, 18, was last seen leaving her Cecil Hills family home about 9am on Wednesday.
Police said she had arranged to meet two men about 10am at Leumeah railway station, with the trio planning to camp out in an area of bushland near Campbelltown.
Nona was last seen wearing a white shirt and carrying a small bag.
Officers spent yesterday scouring bushland in the area while detectives interviewed one of the men the teenager had arranged to meet through the social networking site.
Earlier yesterday, Nona's brother Gary Belomesoff, 20, described his sister as "a good girl''.
"She doesn't go out often. She's more a home girl," he said.
Mr Belomesoff said his sister, a TAFE student who graduated from Canley Vale High School last year, had a deep love of animals, which was the reason she had planned the trip.
US-based Facebook authorities were last night helping with the investigation, providing access to her profile and tracking her final communications.
Police issued a warning to social network users: "You don't know who is on the other end of the computer.''
Comment: Don't believe person that you don't know because we don't know how the person is. Don't too believe on social network. Don'r put yourself in risk.
