What are the potential effects of global warming in terms of the climate change and how they can be arrested?

Global warming is a worldwide concern issue. Global warming is the increase in the Earth’s temperature due to emission of greenhouse gases. Greenhouse gases trap heat in the atmosphere and warm up the Earth. However, the burning of gasoline and fossil fuels increases the concentration of the greenhouse gases in the atmosphere. As a result, the Earth becomes warmer. According to Holli Riebeek (2007), the average Earth’s surface temperature has increased from 0.6 to 0.9 degree Celsius in the past century and it is believed that the temperature will keep on increasing in the next century. Global warming causes some potential impacts in terms of the climate change to us, so prompt actions should be taken to solve this problem to prevent it from getting worse.

Global warming has influenced the weather conditions on Earth. It leads to more hot days and fewer cool days. Report of Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change showed that there are increase in both heat waves and intense rain events during the past 50 years (Riebeek, 2007). Global warming causes bigger and more destructive storms to some area and it also leads to more widespread drought to some countries for example Niger and Darfur. The erratic weather patterns could lead to hurricanes, tornados or typhoons bringing catastrophe and loss of lives.

Another significant impact of global warming is the rise of the sea levels. This is caused by the rising of the temperature. As the temperature increases, the oceans become warmer, causing the ice caps and glaciers melt more quickly (Woodford, 2006). Consequently, the sea levels increase. This will cause serious problems to the population lives in the coastal area. In the film An Inconvenient Truth (2007), Al Gore comments that if the sea levels increase tremendously, it will cause some low-land area for instance Beijing, San Francisco bay, New York City and Netherlands to be inundated.

In addition, global warming also affects the ecosystems of our planet. As the temperature increases, plants and animals have to adapt themselves to the new weather conditions. If they are unable to do so, they will face extinction. There is a prediction shows that thirty to forty percents of the species in the world will be at risk of extinction due to global warming (Woodford, 2006). Besides that, global warming also causes the problem of infectious diseases, development of new diseases like SARS, Arena virus and Lyme Diseases, and reemergence of some old diseases such as Avian flu and West Nile Virus (Gore, 2007).

Immediate actions should be taken to solve the global warming issue as it brings detrimental effects to our Earth. One of the solutions is to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. Chris Woodford (2006) suggests that we can use less energy technology, switch to renewable energy, use energy-saving fluorescent and reduce the usage of car. Governments also have the responsibility to reduce the carbon dioxide emissions. They should restrict the uses of the harmful chemicals to reduce global warming. Al Gore (2007) says that we are able to solve the global warming problems and although each of us is the causes of the global warming, each of us also has the choice to change it. We just need to have the determination to solve the problems.

As a conclusion, global warming brings many negative effects like erratic and more extreme weather, rising of sea levels and impacts on ecosystems. Cooperation of every nation in the world is required to solve the problem. Everyone bears this responsibility as the Earth is our only home. We have to try our best to overcome this global environmental challenge.

Aussie News4: Kylie Eastwood still faces prison for getting five-year-old son drunk

By Geoff Wilkinson From: Herald Sun March 04, 2010 1:42AM

Mum gave boy, 5, up to five shots of grappa
He was so drunk he was unable to stand up
Suspended sentence 'not in public interest'

A MOTHER who got her five-year-old son so drunk he could barely speak or stand may yet be sent to jail.
Victoria's Director of Public Prosecutions, Jeremy Rapke QC, has appealed on the grounds that Kylie Eastwood's suspended sentence was manifestly inadequate.

Papers served on her lawyers are believed to have also cited lack of denunciation and failure to act in the public interest as reasons for the appeal.

Eastwood, 33, of Moe, was given a suspended sentence last month, despite breaching two suspended sentences.

The court was told that her son was taken to hospital by ambulance with a blood-alcohol content of .09 after she gave him four or five shots of grappa.

The clear liquid home brew was tested by police and found to be 44 per cent ethanol.

Officers called to her home on the day said the boy was unable to speak to them and "kept making grunting noises" and hitting walls.

Eastwood pleaded guilty to reckless conduct endangering serious injury, which carries a maximum penalty of five years' jail, and failing to protect a child from harm, which has a maximum of 12 months.

She was sentenced to five months' jail, but suspended the penalty for two years.

Magistrate Clive Alsop warned Eastwood she was on her last chance and would be jailed if she came back to court in future for endangering the welfare of her children.

He said several changes in Eastwood's life - principally her abstinence from alcohol since last September - amounted to exceptional circumstances that warranted a suspended sentence.

When Eastwood gave her son grappa in July 2008, she was already on a suspended sentence.

She had been convicted five months earlier of leaving her three children, all aged under ten, home alone for several hours while she went drinking with a friend.

She had also breached a suspended sentence imposed in 2005 for refusing a breath test and driving while disqualified.

Mr Alsop used the opportunity while sentencing Eastwood last month to defend the use of suspended sentences.

Eastwood has six children to four fathers.

Critique :
A mum give a five-year-old son alcohol. We know that alcohol is a bad drugs, it will damage our body and bring a lot of side effects. Even an adult also unable to resist the impacts of alcohol, then how about a five year old child. Alcohol will only damage the child's body system. So, love the children, they are innocent.

Dear Sir/Madam

Compliment on Government’s Efforts in Aiding Flood Victims

With reference to the above matter, I would like to comment on the picture published recently on www.news.com.au. The picture is about the rescuers evacuating flood victims during the severe flood recently.

Government had done a very good job by sending a team of well-trained rescuers on time to help the victims. Those rescuers were highly efficient and were well-prepared in both physically and mentally. In addition, the rescue team showed good coordination and behaved professionally during the mission.

Furthermore, government provided sufficient and comfortable shelter to flood victims. In this critical time, the government succeeded to react spontaneously by providing ample basic needs such as food and medicine. The government also ensured a hygienic refuge is provided to avoid outbreak of diseases such as malaria.

The government also took further actions in helping the flood victims, especially the poor community by giving cash incentives. This cash incentive means a lot to those victims to rebuild or renovate their damaged homes. It also helped in compensating their damaged properties. This can help the victims to reduce the aftermath of the flood faced by the victims so that they can carry out their daily life as usual.

The government’s efforts are highly appreciated. However, as the saying goes, “Prevention is better than cure”, it would be better if the government could improve the efficiency of the drainage system as to prevent cases of flood from time to time. I would be grateful if my letter was published in your newspaper. Thank you for your attention.

Yours faithfully

Fei Wen
