Aussie News 14: Two couples suing doctors for failing to diagnose Down Syndrome

Two Victorian couples are suing the doctors for unable to diagnose Down Syndrome in their unborn babies. The couples said that they are having economic loss as they need to bare on the costs of care of the children. They also said that if they realise that the babies would be born with Down Syndrome, they will abort their pregnancies.
In 2003, there is a rule that set by the High Court which stated that parents can sue the doctors or related authorities of a wrongful birth. New South Wales, South Australia and Tasmania have legalised the claim. While in Victoria, the parents can sue for the compensation for the living costs of the children until they have reach the age of 18.

Comment: Due to some careless make by the doctors or the hospitals, it make them unable to diagnose Down Syndrome in the unborn babies, so they should take full responsibility on these cases. However, parents also have the responsibility too. Women who pregnant after 35 years old should be more careful as their babies have the high risk of Down Syndrome. Besides that, pregnant women should practice healthy lifestyle in order to have a healthy baby.

Aussie News 11: Argentina legalises gay marriage

Argentina was the first Latin America country that legalise the same-sex marriage. After this law has been implemented, the legal code of marriage in Argentina has changed from husband and wife to marrying parties. Besides that, the government says that the homesexuals will have the same right as the heterosexuals. Moreover, the same-sex couples can adopt children and get other benefits.

In my opinion, everyone has the right to choose on the life that they want and everyone should have the same right on everthing. So, we should respect homosexuals marriage. They are human too. They have the same right with other people. We should not discriminate them.

A BEIJING court will hear a case filed against film director James Cameron by a Chinese man who claims the idea for Cameron's latest blockbuster sci-fi movie came from a novel he published.

After throwing out the case in March due to insufficient evidence, the court agreed to the hearing after Zhou Shaomou dropped a demand for as much as $US147 million in compensation, the China Daily said, citing the author.

Avatar, the top-grossing movie of all time, has raked in some $US2.7 billion worldwide since its release.

"I was told to go to the court next Monday to provide more material," Mr Zhou said, without providing details of the new evidence.

Mr Zhou has reserved the right to seek compensation before the Beijing Number One Intermediate Court rules on the case, the state-run newspaper said.

A court official told the China Daily that it could take six months before the case is heard.

"Due to the fact that some accused parties are foreigners or foreign companies it takes time to send the indictment through diplomatic channels," the official Lu Yao said.

Besides Cameron, Mr Zhou is also suing 20th Century Fox Film Corporation, two Chinese movie distributors and Haidian Theatre where he watched the film.

Mr Zhou said the plot of Avatar - the story of a paraplegic former US Marine who is sent to live with a race of blue aliens on the Earth-like moon Pandora - closely resembled that of a novel he wrote in 1997.

The novel, The Legend of the Blue Crow, was published on two Chinese websites in segments in 1999, previous state media reports have said.

However, the official website for the film says Cameron first developed the idea 15 years ago - a few years before Mr Zhou's novel was completed.

Avatar has been wildly popular in China, quickly becoming the highest-grossing film in the country's history after its January 4 release in both 2D and 3D versions.

Comment: Plagiarism is a negative behaviour, so I hope that the related authorities will investigate this case and take prompt action.

Aussie News 9: Young women put Facebook before going to the toilet

toilet seat
  • Women increasingly addicted to social media
  • One in five wake up in night to reply to postings
  • Bosses who ban Facebook do so at their peril

ONE third of young women check Facebook before brushing their teeth or going to the toilet in the mornings.

New research reveals women aged 18 to 34 are becoming increasingly addicted and dependent upon technology and social networking sites.

One in five even said they woke up in the middle of the night to respond to wall postings, tweets and texts, while 37 per cent have fallen asleep with their phones in their hands.

The study of more than 1600 American social media users by Oxygen Media was conducted to chart online behavioural trends.

It also showed that although 63 per cent of respondents used Facebook for networking, nearly half said they had no problem posting photos of their drunken selves on the site.

Other key findings of the study were:

- 79 per cent are fine with kissing in photos posted on Facebook;

- 58 per cent use Facebook to keep tabs on “frenemies”; and

- 50 per cent are fine with being Facebook friends with complete strangers.

A seperate study out this week found that bosses who block Facebook actually hinder productivity in the workplace.

The book Wellbeing: The Five Essential Elements, which draws upon Gallup Consulting research from more than 150 countries, identified five essential elements to overall wellbeing - career wellbeing, social wellbeing, financial wellbeing, physical wellbeing and community wellbeing.

The book's co-author, Tom Rath, said that a person thriving in all five elements will be a better employee.

Part of the reason blocking Facebook and Twitter at work may prove detrimental is the book's finding that people need about six hours of social interaction a day, whether they were introverts or extroverts.

Gallup Consulting engagement manager Allan Watkinson said a part of that time would have to come in the workplace, and the prospect of staff spending hours logged onto social media sites worried some bosses.

"It scares employers that people are going to be sociable and not productive," Mr Watkinson said.

"However, we found that if you can promote that tool and use it in an effective way, actually you are going to get higher productivity."

Comment: We can serve facebook or twitter, but we need to control the time used. So, moderation is very important. If we not exceed, it will bring benefit to us.

Aussie News 8:Couple found dead in Dunlop died of gunshot wounds, say police

-Couple found dead after tip-off
-Kids holidaying with relatives
-No third person involved - police

A COUPLE found dead in their Canberra home died from gunshot wounds inflicted by one or the other of the deceased, police said.
The pair were found in their Dunlop residence, in Canberra's north-west, yesterday afternoon by police officers.

It is believed a colleague raised the alarm when the man failed to show up for work.

"It appears both deceased persons died from apparent gunshot wounds," an ACT Policing spokeswoman said.

"Police do not believe that a third person is involved."

Senior Constable Kyle Williams told reporters outside the house the shooting deaths were "very tragic and a very sad incident".

"The male and female deceased where known to each other through a domestic relationship," he said, adding they had two children.

"Two young children have been located safely. They are currently in the care of family members. They were not involved in this incident."

It's believed the children were staying with relatives for the school holidays when the shootings occurred.

The fatal wounds were inflicted by one or the other of the deceased, Senior Constable Williams said.

"It is apparent from inquiries that the male and female have died from apparent gunshot wounds.

"At this stage police do not believe any other person was involved."

Senior Constable Williams wouldn't say if more than one gun had been found in the house. Nor would he comment when asked if police were investigating a murder-suicide.

It's thought the man and woman were both in their 30s.

Their names will be released after police have informed all family members of their deaths.

Polwarth Circuit remains closed but Senior Constable Williams said it would reopen "within 48 hours".

A neighbour told AAP last night the deceased were a "lovely couple" with two young children, a boy and a girl, who had lived at the house for about eight years.

ACT Policing said a number of witnesses had provided statements and their investigations were ongoing.

"However, anyone who has not yet spoken to police and can provide information which may be able to assist the investigation is urged to contact Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000," the spokeswoman said.
